What to Expect - A guide to starting therapy
Starting therapy is a courageous step toward healing, growth, and greater well-being. Whether you're seeking support as an individual, a couple, or navigating complex relationships, it can be helpful to know what the process looks like. Here's an overview of the typical therapy structure I use, so you can feel more prepared and confident as you begin.
Laying the Foundation
Your first session is an opportunity to begin building a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship. You are welcome to come with any questions, as we’ll have time to get to know each other.
During this intake phase, we’ll typically review:
The structure of therapy and what to expect
The boring but necessary part - practice policies and procedures
Your experiences and concerns that brought you to therapy
This time is about helping you feel heard and understood from the very beginning.
Getting to Know You & Clarity
Over the next few sessions, we’ll take a deeper look at your story. This includes exploring:
Your personal and relational history
Core strengths and challenges
Relationship patterns and life transitions
Your faith background (if applicable) and worldview
The goal of this phase is to get a full picture of your life so we can tailor the therapeutic approach to your unique needs.
Once we’ve gathered a fuller understanding, we’ll work together to clarify your goals for therapy. Whether you're seeking emotional healing, improved communication in your marriage, or tools for navigating anxiety, we’ll develop a treatment plan that reflects your values and priorities.
Doing the Work
This is the core of therapy and continues from early sessions through to your final appointment. In this phase, we’ll:
Engage in “the work” of therapy while I guide you in interventions such as somatic therapy, IFS, EMDR, and faith-integrated work.
You always remain the expert on you and your story, so your feedback is welcome! We can adapt strategies as needed so they feel like a good fit for your growth and healing.
I’ve found that therapy works best when clients are actively involved. Though I’m not big on formal “homework,” you’ll be encouraged to apply what we discuss in everyday life and bring insights back into sessions for continued growth.
